For its spring 2009 mailer, Barneys New York opted for models with a
little more character: seven up-and-coming actors. With typical
enthusiasm, creative director Simon Doonan calls them "the Dennis
Hoppers of the future"; time will be the judge of that, but suffice it
to say the stars are the cool, slightly sinister guys from the
sidelines. Case in point: The requisite Mad Men spot goes to
Vincent Kartheiser (pictured, in John Varvatos), sporting a very
un-Pete Campbell beardo-bohemian look. (His ideas, however, are total
Campbell: Good style, Kartheiser told Doonan, is "always getting caught
but never pleading guilty.") Why this new tack? "Every few seasons, you
get Zoolander-phobia," Doonan explains. In other words: Blue Steel not included.
